With our Top Five Family Days Out in Birmingham, the kids will be spoilt for choice. And we promise not to tell anyone if it turns out you enjoy yourself just as much…
It’s a chocolate lover’s dream. Birmingham city centre was home to John Cadbury’s first shop in 1824. During the 1890s his sons George and Richard built the famous Bournville factory and village, to house their workers in light, rectangular houses with their own gardens.
You’ll find much more than history at Cadbury World, however – with interactive exhibits, green screen fun, and an amazing 4D ride featuring all the sights, smells and sounds of chocolate creation. With a hearty portion of free chocolate with every entry ticket, it’s a sweet deal.
Create an alien, explore the stars and learn how a Spitfire was built.
Birmingham’s award-winning science museum is a marvel for all ages. Kids’ City is designed to give children under the age of 7 an understanding of the world around them, from how their bodies work to the science that powers an ordinary street. The Science Garden offers interactive outdoor fun, while the industrial zone will delight budding engineers, with a dip into Birmingham’s own history.
If your family loved Blue Planet 2, they’ll adore this.
Meet Bev the octopus, Ozzy the eel, and a host of sharks, clownfish, sea turtles and more at this city centre aquarium. The 360° ocean tunnel, penguin ice adventure and otter-feeding sessions will delight any animal lover. The centre subtly teaches children about conservation issues too, like protected species and minimising plastic pollution.
If it’s a sunny day plan some outdoor fun in Cannon Hill Park, located just outside the city centre between Moseley and Edgbaston.
The fun park is packed with rides for all ages from toddlers to ten-year-olds. Run around the park, take a trip on the land train, or pedal a giant swan around the boating lake before getting competitive at the wheelchair-accessible mini golf course, complete with its own waterfall.
Dinosaurs, volcanoes, fluorescent rocks and the creation of the universe… if you’ve a budding scientist in the family, look no further.
The Lapworth in Edgbaston is home to the University of Birmingham’s impressive geological collection. It’s a world-class museum of fossils, minerals, rocks and more which tells the story of our planet, through innovative and fun interactive displays and galleries. Best of all, it’s completely free!
