Why B Corp matters to us

20 August 2025

We sat down with our Director of Operations, Julie Crump, to talk all things B Corp.

It’s been nearly a month since we officially became a B Corp certified hotel, and to be honest, we’re still buzzing. Becoming a B Corp isn’t just about getting a badge – it’s about committing to a better way of doing business, long term.

To dive into what the journey was really like (and what’s next), we caught up with Julie Crump, our brilliant Director of Operations, who’s been leading the charge from the very beginning.

Q: Let’s start simple. What is B Corp, in your words?

Julie: B Corp is a global movement of businesses that genuinely want to do better,  for their people, the planet, and the communities around them.

Being B Corp certified means we’ve met really high standards when it comes to sustainability, transparency, and social impact. It’s about showing that we care, and that we’ve got the policies and proof to back it up.

Q: Was the application process as tough as they say?

Julie: Honestly? Yes. But in the best kind of way.

It starts with something called the B Impact Assessment, which basically turns your business inside out in the most detailed, thoughtful way possible. We were answering questions about everything: how we treat staff, how we source suppliers, what our environmental policies look like… the list goes on.

We had to work closely with teams across the hotel to gather data, track our impact, and make sure our practices were as strong as we thought they were. Then B Lab, the organisation behind B Corp, reviewed everything, asked for extra documentation, and even ran interviews with us to double check.

It was a lot,  but it also gave us so much insight. Totally worth it.

Q: What does becoming a B Corp actually mean for the hotel?

Julie: It’s huge for us.

For starters, it proves we’re serious about our values – that we’re not just talking the talk, but walking it too. Whether it’s how we support our team, how we connect with the local community, or how we’re working to reduce our environmental footprint, this certification tells the world we’re doing business the right way.

We’re especially proud of the work we’ve done around staff wellbeing and community engagement. Those aren’t always the things that get shouted about, but they matter deeply to us.

Q: So, what now — feet up and enjoy the title?

Julie: Not quite!

B Corp certification only lasts for three years, so the work doesn’t stop. If anything, this is just the start.

We’ve already got our eyes on how we can improve further, and we’ll be using the B Impact Assessment as a framework to keep growing. It’s become a tool to guide our decisions, whether we’re planning new services, reviewing policies, or thinking about partnerships.

The badge is great, but the mindset shift is the real reward.

Q: What would you say to other businesses thinking about going for B Corp?

Julie: If you’re passionate about doing things properly, not just for your bottom line, but for the people around you and the planet,  then go for it.

Yes, it’s a commitment. Yes, it takes time. But it also makes you better. More accountable. More aligned with your values.

And if you’ve got a great team behind you? You’ll smash it.

Q: Any final thoughts?

Julie: We’re just proud, really. Becoming a B Corp hotel isn’t just a tick on a checklist – it’s something that reflects who we are at our core. And it’s only the beginning.
